Taxi Protest in Kathmandu

The government and agitating taxi entrepreneurs reached an agreement on Thursday to form a high-level committee to study the cab operators’ concerns. Following the accord, taxi entrepreneurs have also decided to withdraw their protest.The agitating taxi operators said the decision was made as the strike would the general public as the festivals like Dashain and Tihar have arrived around the corner. Akhil Nepal Krantikari Yatayat Majdoor Sangh affiliated to Mohan Baidya-led Maoist and Nepal Loktantrik Yatayat Majdoor Sangathan have been staging protest for the past two days to press for their 17-point demand. “A committee will be formed including representatives of taxi entrepreneurs and concerned government agencies to study the issues raised by taxi entrepreneurs,” said Devendra Karki, officiating secretary of MoPIT. “But, there will be no changes to government’s decision to register new taxis.”
